Ossian Honored
as USDA BioPreferred®
Program Pioneer

Ossian Inc., a leader in innovative ice melt solutions, is proud to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a BioPreferred Program Pioneer. This recognition celebrates our early adoption of the USDA Certified BioBased Produce label and our decades long commitment to developing effective and sustainable solutions.

Recognized for Our Commitment to Renewable Innovation

The USDA is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its certification and labeling initiative by honoring manufacturers who demonstrated early trust and support for its mission. As one of the first companies to earn USDA certification for biobased products, Ossian Inc. has been recognized for our role in:

  • Advancing the bioeconomy

  • Reducing reliance on petroleum-based materials

  • Advancing the use of renewable resources

Our BioPreferred Products: Fusion® and Propel®

  • Fusion® – Our patented de-icer based on degraded sugar beet extract. Fusion has been recognized by USDA testing as a 98% biobased product, making it one of the most environmentally friendly de-icing additives available today.

Fusion can be found in our Fusion based liquid de-icers, Ice Guard®, Intense® and Fusion® 80-10-10, as well as one of two biopreferred coating agents on our granular de-icer Hammer®.

Propel - USDA Certified 97% Biobased Product

  • Propel® – Our high-performance de-icer accelerator, designed to enhance melting speed and efficiency. Propel is recognized as a 97% biobased product, reflecting our dedication to combining performance with sustainability.

Propel plays a significant role as a coating agent in our granular de-icers, Triple Melt®  Eco Melt®, Titan® and Hammer®. Propel enhances the melt performance of salt while reducing caking.

These products exemplify our mission: creating ice melt technologies that deliver powerful results while protecting infrastructure, the environment, and communities.

Customer Corner:
Why Biobased Matters for You

What does “biobased” mean?

  • Biobased products are made from renewable plant, marine, or forestry materials—rather than petroleum. This means they come from resources that can be replenished, helping reduce environmental impact.

What does a 97% and 98% rating mean?

  • It means that nearly the entire product is made from renewable biological ingredients, as verified by USDA testing. For comparison, many products on the market have much lower percentages or contain primarily petroleum-derived ingredients.

Why Should I Care?

  • Better for the environment – Fewer fossil fuels, more renewable resources
  • Safer for infrastructure – Designed to work effectively while minimizing damage to roads and concrete
  • Trusted verification – The USDA seal guarantees the renewable content claims are real, not just marketing

When you choose Fusion® or Propel® treated products, you’re not just getting top-tier performance—you’re supporting products that help protect the environment and the communities where they’re used.

What the USDA BioPreferred® Program Means

Created in 2002, the USDA BioPreferred Program encourages the development and growth of markets for biobased products—derived from plants and renewable agricultural, marine, and forestry materials. Products can also include renewable chemicals, bioresins, and biopolymers. The BioPreferred label ensures that a product contains a USDA-verified level of renewable biological content, making it easier for customers to choose sustainably.
